Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif ordered the immediate purchase of wheat to remove the concerns of farmers.
In response to mounting complaints from farmers across the country, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday took swift action by issuing instructions to the federal government to speed up wheat procurement.
To address the concerns of agricultural stakeholders, the Prime Minister has not only increased the federal procurement target from 1.4 lakh tonnes to 1.8 lakh metric tonnes, but has also ordered immediate procurement of wheat from the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASCO). Emphasized. Purchase from revised quota.
Emphasizing transparency as the basis of this procurement process, Shehbaz Sharif stressed the importance of maintaining integrity and fairness in all transactions. The move comes amid reports of discontent among farmers, who have expressed their dismay at the current wheat prices, which are lower than their expectations.
Despite the price fixed by the Punjab government at Rs 3,900 per maund, farmers regret selling their produce at a much lower rate of Rs 3,200 per maund.
While the Punjab Food Department had earlier announced a current stock of 2.3 lakh tonnes of wheat in government godowns, concerns over the price gap remain.
To address these complexities and chart a comprehensive policy framework, a three-member ministerial committee has been tasked with formulating and presenting an integrated strategy for procurement of wheat.
